Penetrating Or Film Forming?

When it comes to natural stone, the bulk of applications involve a penetrating sealer with only a small percentage utilising a film forming coating.
The reason being is a penetrating sealer is regarded as a "natural look" sealer whereas a film forming coating alters the look of your natural stone.
Most film coatings are a form of an acrylic which does not compliment the beauty of stone.
A penetrating sealer on the other hand resides sub-surface ensuring surface is non-slip and breathable preserving the characteristics of stone!

Water Or Solvent Based?

A solvent based film forming sealer is often referred to as a "wet look" sealer slightly darkening substrate and being of a higher gloss than a water based product.
Water based film forming sealers on the other hand provide a "sheen" finish with minimal if any darkening.
Both offer the same level of protection.

Water Or Solvent Based?

A major benefit of water-based sealers is that they can be applied over slightly damp substrates, allowing you to pressure wash and seal on the same day.
Solvent-based sealers on the other hand require surface to be completely bone dry before application.
A solvent based penetrating sealer excels in the denser more compact substrates as it has greater penetrating power whereas on the more porous surfaces a water based sealer may be advantages as product is held closer to surface offering greater repellancy.
Water-based sealers are also low odour in comparison to solvents and are considered more environmentally friendly and therefore safer to use.
Another major point of consideration is appearance. A water based penetrating sealer on full cure is close to invisible and often referred to as a “natural look”.
A solvent based sealer while still considered “natural look” may darken substrate and will vary from surface to surface dependant on how much of a reaction takes place.
Both water and solvent based sealers offer the same level of protection.

Select Surface

Some coatings excel on some substrates, some coatings excel on many substrates.
To make selecting the most appropriate product for your application please answer below series of questions.

What Protection Is More Important For You?

Penetrating Solvent Based Sealer.
Penetrating Sealers in general terms can be divided into 2 categories of repellency.
1) Moisture Contaminants: Consisting of Silane/Siloxanes and aiding in the protection of water borne contaminants such as efflorescence, moss, mould, algae etc.
2) Oily Contaminants: Consisting of Fluoropolymers and aiding in the protection of previous mentioned water borne contaminants with the addition of oily and organic borne contaminants such as oil, tea, coffee, wine etc.

Film Forming or Penetrating Concrete Protection

When it comes to concrete floor coatings, the bulk of applications involve a film forming coating. To generalise these can be divided into single packs or 2 packs.
The term single pack is used to describe a coating that does not require a hardener, catalyst or activator to cure...or in other words paints that dry in the air. Simply pop the lid, stir and apply.
A 2 pack requires two components (part A, part B) to be mixed together prior to application. When mixed, a chemical reaction causes the paint to cure and harden.
2 packs are known for their excellent durability and resistance properties particularly against chemicals, heat and moisture.
A penetrating sealer on the other hand does NOT create a film but sits just below the surface preserving the characteristics of concrete! It is for this reason a penetrating sealer is often referred to as a "natural look" sealer.

Clear or Coloured Single Pack?

Would you like your single pack coating to be clear or coloured?
Clear coatings are transparent and allow light to pass through them. This is beneficial in circumstances where wishing to protect substrate but still see it.
Coloured coatings are full bodied (opaque) and cover beneath surface completely. This is beneficial in circumstances where wishing to change the appearance of existing surface.

Single Pack Or 2 Pack ?

Most single pack coatings are a form of an acrylic and are the most cost effective of the film forming range.
They give moderate repellent protection against various chemicals, stains, oil, water, and create a dustless surface just as most other coatings achieve.
Though they are the least durable of the film forming sealers, they stand up well to light or moderate traffic and may need to be reapplied anywhere from 2 to 6 years.
Best selected if after a general coating system that is the easiest to apply.
In terms of durability, chemical resistance, appearance and quality, most applicators will agree that the ultimate coating is a 2 pack system.
These coatings offer maximum performance in terms of protection for your slab while delivering amazing looks at the same time.
They provide resistant protection against petro-chemicals, water, salts and staining.
Application generally is similar to any other coating with the exception 2 components (Part A and Part B hardener) are mixed together.
2 Packs are mostly used in warehouses, restaurants, workshops and showrooms where a heavier duty coating is required or residential applications where not wishing to frequently re-seal.

Internal Or External?

Is your project internal or external?
We need to ask as not all 2 Packs are UV stable.

Clear or Coloured 2 Pack?

Would you like your 2 pack coating to be clear or coloured?
Clear coatings are transparent and allow light to pass through them. This is beneficial in circumstances where wishing to protect substrate but still see it.
Coloured coatings are full bodied (opaque) and cover beneath surface completely. This is beneficial in circumstances where wishing to change the appearance of existing surface.

What Is More Important To You?

All 2 packs when compared to single packs excel in terms of chemical, abrasion and solvent resistance.
This translates into a much harder and durable coating with increased lifespan.
Due to CSW Coatings extensive range selecting the most appropriate 2 pack can be determined by project priorities.
In other words, what is most appropriate or important to your application?

Ease Of Application

CSW Coatings 2 pack products are utilised by both DIY and professional applicators alike and have always been considered beginner and user friendly.
Just simply due to range, some 2 packs can be considered a little easier to apply than others.
This could be the result or combination of many factors including the products carrier, viscosity, workability etc.
